Papers, 1862-1969.

Family letters, papers, and photographs spanning three generations. Family members represented in the correspondence include Charles Tyree, Jennie Tyree Fowlkes, Sarah D. Tyree, and siblings Paul and Jesse Fowlkes and Frances Patterson. Topics include a possible scholarship for Paul at the State Teachers College of Alabama. Other family papers include birth and death records, business contracts, receipts and bills, divorce papers, and religious pamphlets. Also included are the pension papers for Charles Tyree, who served during the Civil War with the U.S. Colored Infantry.

As adults, Jesse Jr. settled in Cleveland after World War II; Paul moved to Washington, D.C.; and Frances settled in Indianapolis after graduating from college. The 14th Infantry Regiment of United States Colored Troops was organized at Gallatin, Tenn., in 1863. The regiment marched to the relief of Dalton, Ga.; was at the siege of Decatur, Ala.; fought in the battle of Nashville; and served at Chattanooga and in the District of Eastern Tennessee before being mustered out at Greenville in March 1866.
